TMJ & Sleep Apnea

Relieve Your Jaw Pain And Smile More!

When you chew, swallow, speak and yawn, you are using joints and muscles called temporomandibular joints or TMJ. They are located on either side of your head, just in front of your ears. These joints are considered some of the most complicated and powerful joints in the entire body. If you have problems with the muscle, bone or other tissues around the joints, you may have a temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD. Symptoms of a TMD include:

  • Pain in the neck and/or shoulders
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Hearing loss or ear pain
  • Grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw while sleeping
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Problems opening or closing your mouth
  • Hearing a popping or grinding sound in your jaw
  • Suffering from chronic headaches in your temples or above your eyes

Most often, TMDs are caused by a combination of factors such as injuries to your face or jaws or joint diseases such as arthritis. Clenching or grinding your teeth when you are under stress or when you are asleep can also trigger TMDs. Partial or full dentures that are loose and certain habits such as nail biting can lead to TMDs, as well. If you have undergone major dental reconstructive procedures, othodontics or teeth extractions, you should talk to us about how to prevent and manage TMDs in Brantford.

At Family Tree Dental, you will receive a thorough consultation examination, to evaluate your symptoms and address your concerns about your jaw joints to see if it is our place to go any further or to recommend a different option for you. We will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to alleviate your TMD. In some cases, we may refer you to other treatment partners, such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, cranio-mandibular specialists or even massage therapists. Together, we will devise a way to bring you relief and get you smiling once again. Contact us today at 519-753-3341.
